Sex and The Cinema

It's fall & for me that means more tv & books in my down time. I rarely watch films or series, but October-December I like to cozy up and let my mind wander.

This time of year was when I decided to revisit some of my favorite David Lynch films, not long before his passing, oddly enough. A little while later, a fellow sex work cinephile (@lilbirdliv on X) was doing a write up on the passing of Lynch and his ties to sex workers. I'd recently made reference to him in a tweet from a great date I'd had involving Lost Highway so I tossed my name into the hat. The interview questions were brilliant and her writing style along with her film tastes and interests really speak to me. I was thrilled and honored to be part of this piece from her!

The article that Liv wrote up with quotes from myself and other workers is a fantastic read & gave my admirers probably their first glimpse into what I enjoy or make note of when choosing or revisiting some films or series. I don't often share my film, music or literature tastes online but perhaps I should. You never know what you'll discover about me, right? You can read that article here in the link below. For more on my tales of sex and the cinema continue reading..if you dare..

Before the era of Netflix and chill, sharing intimacy while a flick is on in the background was already pretty common as a pretext for a reason to hang out, but for myself it could really set the tone. Often, the reaction or even a blip of curiosity from a lover in regards to what was on the screen would sometimes be an indication of if we would hookup again. As I would come to learn along the years, my taste is sort of out there and most of my lovers and partners did not have a shared interest in many of my choices there. Solo viewing, often repeating a handful of times or revisiting each year during the fall became my thing.

Eventually I kept my love of art noir films, black and white thrillers, odd flashes of nude & erotic imagery, very surreal, dream like sequences and plots filled with nonsense or outright camp to myself. I love mainstream tv shows, (mind garbage as my mom calls it) reality TV and blockbuster hits just as much as anyone, but I really enjoy getting lost in the cinematography.

I enjoy watching things that are hard to figure out or have no meaning at all, even more so if a lot of thought went into how they or where they filmed something. Photography and videography are like magic to me, being able to capture things in real time and make them look completely different on screen. The mechanics of it all impresses me, even while on set and even if the final product is "not good" to most people.

When it comes to movies I've had sexual encounters to, here are a few that come to mind:

Stir of Echoes

Gia

The Science of Sleep

Gone in 60 seconds

Passion of the Christ

(kinda hard to get groped to that one but when you are a horny teenager that happens)

Pulse (Octane)

Dracula (duh)

Queen of the Damned (duh)

None of these are exactly motor revving or heartfelt, but they do stand out as part of the background soundtrack to my early years of "come over and chill" civ sex adventures.

When I'm alone, I tend to rewatch the entire Buffy the Vampire Slayer series on DVD as well as Lord of the Rings and Sabrina The Teenaged Witch (for comfort).

When it comes to some of my favorite works, these film makers tend to do a good job of launching me into someplace unusual. Sometimes thought provoking, sometimes just really cool visuals or soundtracks but all the right elements in a lot of their work for me.

Baz Luhrmann

David Lynch

Jean-Louis Bompoint

Francis Ford Coppola

Sofia Coppola

Stanley Kubrick

William Daniels

The Daniels

I won't ever subject my dates to my film interests unless they specifically want me to curate an evening of entertainment. We do end up on the topic enough that I felt I should write about mine. Sometimes, we are lucky enough to get around to putting something on during  multi day dates and I'm always excited to share! I enjoy getting to know your tastes as well. To me, personal interests in media can be really intimate and not often shared with lots of people.
